  17. SSPPEECCIIFFIICCAATTIIOONN
  18.        CCOOUUNNTT  counts  lines,  words,  and characters in the named
  19.        files, or in the default input if  no  names  appear.   It
  20.        also keeps a total count for all named files.  A word is a
  21.        maximal string of characters delimited by spaces, tabs, or
  22.        new-lines.

  24.        The  switches LLIINNEESS, WWOORRDDSS, and CCHHAARRSS may be used to spec­
  25.        ify that a subset of lines, words, and characters  are  to
  26.        be  reported.   If no switches are given CCOOUUNNTT defaults to
  27.        all of them.

  29.        When names are specified on the command line, they will be
  30.        printed along with the counts.
